Berlin – Former Germany player and manager Franz Beckenbauer congratulated Didier Deschamps after the French coach’s World Cup win saw him join Beckenbauer in an elite group to have won football’s biggest prize as both player and coach.
After coaching France to the 2018 World Cup, adding that title to that which he won as a player in 1998, Deschamps joins Brazil’s Mario Zagallo and Beckenbauer, who Bild newspaper’s Tuesday edition quoted as saying: «Welcome to the club. Now there are three of us. Maybe we should meet up there.»
Beckenbauer captained West Germany to the World Cup as a player in 1974 and then led them to glory as coach in 1990. Zagallo was a key figure in Brazil’s golden age, twice winning the cup as a player in 1958 and 1962 before coaching them to the 1970 title.
«It’s astounding that, in the long history of the World Cup since 1930, this has happened so rarely,» Beckenbauer said of the achievement, adding that many had tried and failed – giving as an example Argentina’s iconic Diego Maradona, who lifted the World Cup with Argentina 1986 but couldn’t repeat the trick as coach in 2010.
