Alfaraj and Aldawsari overturned Salah opener to secure win
Saudi Arabia and Egypt completed their Group A campaign in a game filled with incident during the first half and featuring a late, late winner.
Essam Elhadary: «I apologise to the Egyptian people on my behalf, and for my colleagues, after the three defeats. We tried and did not have luck – this is football. I’m proud of what I have achieved and this achievement is worthy of Egypt. I did it with all our players’ help.»
THE FINAL WHISTLE SOUNDS.
This match looked to be petering out into a draw but that excellent stoppage-time strike gave Saudi Arabia their first World Cup win in 24 years at Volgograd Arena. They take third place in Group A, Egypt will head home disappointed in fourth.
Salem Aldawsari: «We played a big game, we managed to achieve victory, an honourable victory. I was able to register my name in the list of players who scored in the World Cup and this is a matter of pride. We were hoping to qualify but the first match did not live up to our expectations and we did not deserve to lose the second game.»
Osama Hawsawi: «We secured three points to add to the history of the Saudi team. We had a great performance and we were able to win. We stopped the serious [threat] of Mohamed Salah and his companions.»
