Omitted Goetze tells Germany to ‘get that fifth star’

Moscow  – Mario Goetze refuses to be bitter about his omission from Germany’s World Cup squad and on Sunday said he was hoping for the best for «my team» in Russia.

Goetze scored the winning goal in the final against Argentina four years ago as Germany lifted the World Cup for a fourth time. But he has not been included in Joachim Loew’s squad this time after a poor season for Borussia Dortmund.

«I am crossing my fingers for my team,» Goetze wrote on Twitter. «Go get that fifth star.»

National teams have stars above their badges on their jerseys to indicate how many World Cups they have won.

Lars Stindl, who missed out on the tournament through injury, also urged Germany to go all the way again.

«Boys, I’m crossing my fingers for you. Bring that Cup back to Germany again,» he wrote.

The world champions open their group campaign against Mexico later on Sunday.
