Lufthansa cancels 800 flights due to public sector strike
Frankfurt – A warning strike called by a German labour union for Tuesday has led to the cancellation of hundreds of Lufthansa flights, the airline said.
Instead of 1,600 flights to airports in Frankfurt, Munich, Cologne, and Bremen, only 800 will go ahead, according to a Lufthansa statement. Some 90,000 passengers will be affected.
Fifty-eight intercontinental flights have also been cancelled.
Germany’s Verdi labour union said that ground traffic personnel, customer support and some of the airport fire services would be affected by the one-day strike.
Lufthansa said customers can change their flight dates free of charge, or, for domestic destinations, exchange their flights for train tickets.
The escalation in the dispute over public sector pay was slammed as «unacceptable» by Lufthansa personnel chief Bettina Volkens, who noted that the airline itself was not involved in the pay dispute.
Verdi has threatened to bring other parts of the German economy to a standstill with its warning strikes this week, including local transport, childcare and legal services.
Negotiations over the pay dispute are set to begin on Sunday.
