Se trata del condado Harris, el m\u00e1s grande de Texas y donde se asienta la ciudad de Houston<\/a>, que pondr\u00e1 en marcha un fondo de defensa legal para inmigrantes indocumentados detenidos y en pleno proceso de deportaci\u00f3n, de acuerdo con una propuesta aprobada este martes.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

La propuesta, presentada por la jueza administrativa del Condado Harris,\u00a0Lina Hidalgo<\/a>, obtuvo tres votos en favor y dos en contra por parte de la Corte de Comisionados del Condado, que ella preside.<\/span><\/h4>\n

\u201cS\u00e9 que no puedo efectuar cambios a las pol\u00edticas federales, pero s\u00ed podemos ayudar a los inmigrantes a obtener una representaci\u00f3n judicial mientras navegan este sistema que es para muchos nuevo y complicado\u201d, se\u00f1al\u00f3 Hidalgo ante el pleno de la Corte de Comisionados.<\/span><\/h4>\n

Nuevo fondo ayudar\u00eda a inmigrantes indocumentados<\/span><\/h4>\n

La magistrada administrativa agreg\u00f3 que este fondo de defensa legal, que tendr\u00eda un costo anual de medio mill\u00f3n de\u00a0d\u00f3lares<\/a>, no solo reducir\u00eda el n\u00famero de arrestos y deportaciones, sino que tambi\u00e9n brindar\u00eda imparcialidad al sistema jur\u00eddico.<\/span><\/h4>\n

Seg\u00fan Hidalgo, el programa tardar\u00e1 unos meses en implementarse. De esa manera, los inmigrantes indocumentados contar\u00e1n con las mismas herramientas que cualquier otra persona jur\u00eddica para defenderse.<\/span><\/h4>\n

\u201cEl derecho a la justicia no puede ser solamente una consigna; debe ser tambi\u00e9n una responsabilidad moral y \u00e9tica\u201d, enfatiz\u00f3 Hidalgo, quien dijo haber visitado varios centros de detenci\u00f3n migratorios de la regi\u00f3n. \u201cY he visto a las mismas mujeres y ni\u00f1os sumidos en la tristeza que vemos en las im\u00e1genes de televisi\u00f3n, que no tienen otra opci\u00f3n que comparecer solos en las cortes, sin un abogado\u201d, agreg\u00f3.<\/span><\/h4>\n

Es el caso de \u00c1ngela Lam\u00fas, madre soltera de dos ni\u00f1as y natural de El Salvador, que al igual que decenas de personas se dieron cita para apoyar la propuesta y dar a conocer su experiencia.<\/span><\/h4>\n

\u201cPor no tener los recursos necesarios para pagar un abogado, tuve que asumir mi defensa sola en un pa\u00eds cuyas leyes no entend\u00eda. Estoy a punto de ser deportada y separada de mis hijas\u201d, declar\u00f3 Lam\u00fas, quien pidi\u00f3 la aprobaci\u00f3n del fondo legal.<\/span><\/h4>\n

Acuerdos y desacuerdos sobre el apoyo a los inmigrantes<\/span><\/h4>\n

Andrea Molina, mujer transg\u00e9nero y directora de la Organizaci\u00f3n Latina de Trans en Texas, dijo que la propuesta ayudar\u00eda a subsanar las desigualdades sistem\u00e1ticas a las que se enfrentan miembros de la comunidad LGTBQ que se encuentran bajo custodia.<\/span><\/h4>\n

\u201cNuestro colectivo sufre porque los centros de detenci\u00f3n de inmigraci\u00f3n no cuentan con los recursos legales y de salud necesarios para atenderlos\u201d, observ\u00f3 Molina.<\/span><\/h4>\n

Pero no todos est\u00e1n de acuerdo. \u201cLos contribuyentes en Texas pagamos cerca de mil millones de d\u00f3lares al a\u00f1o por el costo de los cr\u00edmenes y delitos cometidos por los inmigrantes indocumentados. No es justo que sigamos subsidi\u00e1ndolos con nuestros impuestos\u201d, expuso Mar\u00eda Espinoza, fundadora de The Remembrance Project, que tiene como finalidad dar a conocer los cr\u00edmenes en que han participado indocumentados.<\/span><\/h4>\n

Por su parte, Makayla Rodr\u00edguez, de la organizaci\u00f3n Mi Familia Vota, cuya funci\u00f3n es promover la participaci\u00f3n electoral, inst\u00f3 a los comisionados a votar en favor de la medida para reducir la inseguridad de muchos estudiantes y \u201cso\u00f1adores\u201d que no tienen protecci\u00f3n legal.<\/span><\/h4>\n

\u201cEstos j\u00f3venes no merecen vivir con el temor permanente de enfrentar una deportaci\u00f3n por un error administrativo o porque sus padres los trajeron consigo cuando eran peque\u00f1os\u201d, expres\u00f3 Rodr\u00edguez.<\/span><\/h4>\n

Seg\u00fan cifras oficiales, en Harris viven cerca de 412.000 inmigrantes indocumentados que conforman el 10% de la fuerza laboral del condado. Adem\u00e1s, uno de cada cinco menores de edad cuenta con uno de los padres en una situaci\u00f3n migratoria irregular.<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n
