\u00a0<\/span>Munich \u00a0–\u00a0<\/span>The first all-electric BMW, the compact i3, has been rolling off assembly lines in Germany since 2013. Now, the German automaker\u2019s second all-electric model, the iX3 SUV, is set to be built in China starting in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unveiling the iX3 concept car at the Beijing Motor Show, BMW announced that the series model would be manufactured in collaboration with its Chinese partner Brilliance in the city of Shenyang. Currently, the X3 with petrol and diesel engines is built at BMW\u2019s US plant in Spartanburg and exported from there all over the world.<\/p>\n

BMW sells a third of its cars in China, where carmakers face new quotas for electric vehicles, while the German carmaker is currently building hybrids with electric and combustion engines in ten of its domestic plants. The electric BMW i-next is expected to start production in 2021 at the company\u2019s plant in the town of Dingolfing, while the i4 electric coupe will be produced in Munich, although a start date has yet to be decided.<\/p>\n

The BMW iX3 concept car unveiled in Beijing has a 270-horsepower electric engine and should be able to travel 400 kilometres on a full charge. A new aspect of the model\u00a0is that its electric engine, transmission and power electronics are combined into a single component, which makes for flexible installation into a wide variety of other models.<\/p>\n

By 2025, BMW plans to offer 12 all-electric models and 13 plug-in hybrids.<\/p>\n
